In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-7:29), Jesus focused on the hearts of his listeners. He turned to his disciples (Matthew 5:1-2) and preached what we today call the "Beatitudes." He called his men to be different, to see the world from God's perspective, and to treat people in a supernatural way. Jesus showed that developing leaders begins with changing the listeners' point of view.
Jesus challenged the disciples to rethink their attitude toward the following points.
- spiritual poverty and success
- sadness and mourning
- meekness and kindness
- passion and hunger for life
- mercy and compassion
- purity and integrity
- peacemaking and revenge
- persecution and adversity
