Charisma – Peter

Peter's charisma leads others to accept his leadership.

From everywhere, dots find their way to the center and stay in its orbit.
Leadership Quality #2

Charisma: Charisma is the ability to win people over to yourself and your cause – and it can be learned.

In a pivotal conversation, Jesus asked Peter about his identity: "But whom say ye that I am?" (Matt 16:15). Peter does not hesitate and answers that Jesus is the Christ. Jesus then affirms his confession and declares that he will build his church on the rock of this confession (Matt 16:18). Jesus then promises Peter divine authority (Matt 16:19), and in the beginning Peter did indeed lead the church in Jerusalem.

Rows of blocks rise on a large rock, crowned by a golden stone – like Peter’s confession on which the church is built.

Peter had charisma and attracted other people, who also followed him. As a disciple, he became a leader among leaders. What gave Peter this charisma that led others to accept his leadership qualities? The following thoughts can be drawn together from the four Gospels:

  • His personality. Peter seemed to have a sanguine/choleric temperament. He was usually the first to speak up.
  • His sense of purpose. Peter accepted Jesus' call faster than any of the Twelve. He was the first to act.
  • His insight into people. Peter attracted other people. He acted like a magnet that either drew others in or pushed them away.
  • His passion. Peter had an inner fire. He wanted to serve God and make an impact.

Peter's Confession of Christ
13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.
