Movie – The Teachers’ Lounge and the Quality of Discernment

A young teacher wants to resolve a series of thefts fairly. Her well-meant solo effort costs her the trust of her colleagues, the parents and her class.

Everything falls through the filter. One half passes through; the other is sorted out.
Leadership Quality #7

Discernment: Many people believe half of what they hear. Good leaders know which half.

Leadership Law #6

“The Teachers’ Lounge” is a German feature film by İlker Çatak, who wrote the screenplay with Johannes Duncker. It premiered at the Berlinale in February 2023 and was released in cinemas on May 4, 2023. Leonie Benesch plays the mathematics and physical education teacher Carla Nowak. The film won five German Film Awards and was nominated for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film in 2024. The fictional story is an object lesson in discernment: good intentions are no substitute for an eye for the consequences. An example of the Quality of Discernment.

A golden domino tips and takes a row of others with it while the last ones still stand – like the consequences of going it alone in “The Teachers’ Lounge”.

Suspicion is not proof

Situation
Unexplained thefts are piling up at Carla’s school. During a check, several students in her seventh-grade class are searched, among them Ali. The procedure is degrading. Carla does not agree with it and wants to act herself.

Discernment separates assumption from knowledge. The school treats suspects as if they had been found guilty and thereby damages trust. Carla correctly recognizes the injustice. The harder question is which path remedies it without creating a new one.

Examine the means, not just the end

Situation
Carla secretly leaves her laptop’s camera running in the teachers’ lounge. The recording shows an arm in a blouse with a striking pattern. The school secretary Friederike Kuhn wears such a blouse. The act itself cannot be clearly seen in the video.

Carla examines her end, but not her means. The secret recording itself violates the trust she wants to protect. Moreover, it provides only circumstantial evidence. Before any solo effort, three questions help: Am I allowed to do this? What does it really prove? Whom would I need to involve beforehand?

The consequences hit bystanders

Situation
Ms. Kuhn is put on leave and denies the act. Her son Oskar, Carla’s student, is bullied by classmates. He demands an apology. When none comes, he steals the laptop, hits Carla with it in the scuffle and throws it into a river.

Whoever decides must think through the second and third consequences as well. Carla saw the question of who did it, not the suspect’s child in her own class. Discernment asks in advance: Who is affected but not sitting at the table?

Without solid ground, no good argument helps

Situation
Carla becomes isolated among her colleagues, the parents and the students. The school newspaper reproduces an interview with her in abridged form. The principal bans its sale and suspends Oskar. He comes to class anyway and stays silent. In the end, police officers carry him out, chair and all.

The Law of Solid Ground states: trust is the foundation of all leadership. Carla loses it, although she protects Oskar to the very end. Once trust has been damaged, every explanation is read as a tactic. Openness only works early, not after the fact.
Key takeaways

Key lessons

  1. Distinguish clearly between what you know and what you assume.
  2. Examine your means as strictly as your end.
  3. Before a decision, think of everyone it could affect.
  4. Bring others on board early instead of gathering evidence alone.
  5. Protect trust first, because without it your intention counts for little.
Summary

Carla Nowak acts out of a sense of justice and sets off a chain of events that nobody can stop. The film does not condemn her, but it shows the price of a lack of foresight. Discernment means keeping circumstantial evidence and proof, intention and effect, apart. Whoever fails to do so loses the solid ground beneath their own leadership.
