“Dune: Part Two” is a film by Denis Villeneuve based on the novel by Frank Herbert. It opened in German cinemas on 29 February 2024. Timothée Chalamet plays Paul Atreides, Zendaya the Fremen warrior Chani. After the fall of his house, Paul lives among the Fremen on the desert planet Arrakis. His rise shows the dark side of the Law of Buy-In.
A crowd of dots streams across dunes towards a golden point standing on a hollow, dashed pedestal – like the following Paul Atreides wins in “Dune: Part Two”.
01
First the person, then the cause
Situation
At first, some Fremen take Paul and his mother Jessica for spies. Paul learns their way of life, fights at their side and rides a sandworm. He receives the names Usul and Muad’Dib. His successes against the Harkonnens convince even the sceptics.
Link to the law
People first follow a person and only then that person’s vision. Paul earns trust through commitment and closeness. That is the healthy core of the law: credibility comes from doing things together, not from making claims.
02
Buy-in that others have prepared
Situation
The leader Stilgar sees in Paul the messiah of an old prophecy. Chani considers this prophecy an invention meant to steer her people. Jessica becomes a Reverend Mother and deliberately spreads the belief further.
Link to the law
Buy-in can rest on merit or on expectations that others have raised. Leaders should know why people follow them. Those who benefit from a myth bear the responsibility not to exploit it.
03
Paul uses the belief
Situation
Paul hesitates for a long time. His visions show him a holy war in his name. After a heavy attack by the Harkonnens, he goes south after all. He drinks the Water of Life and steps before the assembly. There he declares himself the Lisan al-Gaib.
Link to the law
This is where the law tips over. Paul knows the consequences and still uses the people’s belief as a tool. Character shows in not using approval when it rests on a deception.
04
Chani refuses to follow
Situation
Paul defeats Feyd-Rautha and forces the Emperor to surrender. He demands marriage to Princess Irulan. When the Great Houses reject him, he sends the Fremen into the attack. Chani does not bow and rides off alone.
Link to the law
Buy-in without dissent is dangerous. Chani is the voice that knows Paul best, and he loses it. Leaders need people who say no, and should read their departure as a warning sign.
Key takeaways
Key lessons
01
Earn trust through commitment, not through titles.
02
Ask yourself honestly why people follow you.
03
Do not exploit expectations that you know to be false.
04
Keep critical voices close to you.
05
Measure your influence by what it does to others.
Summary
Paul Atreides wins the Fremen first as a person and then for his cause. Up to that point, the film follows the Law of Buy-In. Then Paul uses a belief that he himself has recognised as dangerous. The film is a warning: buy-in is trust given in advance, and it demands character.
