The Law of Timing – Ecclesiastes

Everything has its time.

The hand sweeps around the dial. Only when action and moment coincide does it ignite.
Leadership Law #19

The Law of Timing: When a leader acts is just as important as what they do.

Solomon knew a thing or two about the Law of Timing. Here he says that there is a right time for everything. Then he lists some examples of it. Birth. Death. Planting. Harvesting. Killing. Healing. Building. Tearing down. Weeping. Laughing. Mourning. Dancing, and so on.

A dial of paired marks with a golden hand pointing to exactly one – like Ecclesiastes 3: there is a time for everything.

The truth is that most things lie outside a leader's control over timing. The only thing they can do is pay attention to the right moment. The following thoughts from Ecclesiastes 3 help in reflecting on this principle.

  • It is the leader's responsibility to recognize God's timing, not to change it.
  • It is the leader's job to accept this timing and to cooperate with God within it.
  • Syncing up with God's timing can make an incredible difference.
  • God created everything according to his own timing.
  • God has placed a sense of eternity in people, which is why they must rely on God and on the revealing of his timing.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
To Everything There Is a Season
1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
