The first difference between leaders and followers is perspective. Both can have character and integrity, both can have love for people, both can be obedient to God. But leaders think differently than followers.
Job and his friends had fundamentally different views. Throughout the whole book, Job held the eternal perspective.
Job 19:25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth.
In the following two verses he visualizes the future in eternity. Not like his wife, who had urged him to curse God, or like his friends, who told him that none of this would have happened if he had only lived better. Job looked past what seemed obvious, to eternity.
Job 19:26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
27 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
What enabled Job to take on this perspective?
- He renewed his perspective. He clung to the righteousness and character of God.
- He let go of his past. He was willing to release what he had lost.
- He remembered his purpose in life. He realized that he lived only for the glory of God.
