“House of the Dragon” is an HBO series by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal. In Germany it runs on Sky; season 1 started in August 2022, season 2 in June 2024. A third season followed in summer 2026, and the fourth is to be the last. The series tells of the war of succession in House Targaryen. King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) wants to do the right thing and shies away from conflict. This is a good way to show the Law of Legacy.
A golden bridge arc breaks off halfway between two pillars, golden dots falling into the gap – like the unsettled succession in “House of the Dragon”.
01
A decision made in the heat of the moment
Situation
Viserys’s wife Aemma dies in childbirth, and shortly afterwards so does the newborn son. His brother Daemon mocks the dead child as the heir for a day. The king banishes Daemon and names his daughter Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) as heir.
Link to the law
Succession is the most important decision a leader makes. It needs a plan, not an occasion. Those who name someone in the heat of the moment have chosen a person but have not yet prepared a succession.
02
New facts, old announcement
Situation
Viserys marries Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke). She gives birth to sons, among them Aegon. Viserys assures Rhaenyra that she remains his heir. He does not clarify what that means for his sons and their supporters.
Link to the law
When the situation changes, the succession has to be explained anew. Silence lets two camps grow that both believe they are in the right. A leader must state the decision to everyone affected, repeatedly and unambiguously.
03
Pushing conflicts aside
Situation
Years later there are doubts about the parentage of Rhaenyra’s sons. Viserys rejects Alicent’s accusations and avoids the dispute. The fronts between Rhaenyra and the queen’s family harden further.
Link to the law
Harmony at any price is not leadership. Unresolved conflicts do not disappear; they are passed on. Those who want to build up a successor must secure support for her and bring opponents to the table early.
04
Last words that everyone hears differently
Situation
On his deathbed, the sick, confused king speaks of a prophecy concerning Aegon the Conqueror. Alicent takes this as a wish that her son Aegon should become king. After his death the council has Aegon crowned. Rhaenyra is proclaimed queen on Dragonstone.

This is where the Quality of Communication shows. A succession must not depend on a single conversation. It should be settled in writing, publicly and verifiably while the leader can still act clearly.
05
The legacy is a war
Situation
The two camps become “the Blacks” and “the Greens”. At the end of the first season, Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys dies on a diplomatic mission. The civil war, the “Dance of the Dragons”, begins and shapes the following seasons.
Link to the law
A leader’s lasting value shows after his departure. Viserys kept the peace only through his own person. Good leadership builds structures that hold even without it.
Key takeaways
Key lessons
01
Plan your succession early and not in response to an occasion.
02
Explain your decision to everyone affected, clearly and more than once.
03
Resolve conflicts over the succession while you are still in office.
04
Put the arrangement in writing so that everyone can verify it.
05
Strengthen your successor visibly before you leave.
Summary
Viserys names an heir but does not secure the succession. He avoids conflict and relies on his word. After his death each side interprets his will differently, and the realm breaks apart. Leaving a legacy means arranging the handover so that it holds without you.
